We had a good discussion today with the surgeon who did my transplant. He thinks that my diseased kidneys have likely stopped functioning altogether and that at least the right kidney should be removed to alleviate the pain I've had. There are the usual risks of having surgery, complicated by the immuno-suppressants I take for the new kidney, but those do not override the reason to do the surgery.
Because my surgeon is a transplant specialist and is not totally familiar with surgical removal of diseased kidneys, we agreed that I would see a urological surgeon to get his opinion on the situation, including the best procedure for removal. Hopefully we will do that soon and then be able to arrange for the actual procedure. The target is as soon as possible after March 24, the one year anniversary of the transplant.
