Surgery - Phase 2

[I thought I had posted this three days ago via phone, but just discovered that it never showed up.]

We had a good meeting with the surgeon yesterday, resulting in scheduling a bilateral robotic laparoscopic nephrectomy on March 28 - 4 days after the one year anniversary of my transplant.  This is a minimally invasive procedure involving four midline holes to detach the kidneys and then a quick incision to remove them. The actual size of the kidneys will determine the size of the incision, which will only be open for a couple of minutes, aiding in healing.

There are the usual risks of any surgery, such as infection, complicated somewhat by my anti-rejection meds. There are also risks in not doing the surgery, including the slight possibility of cancer developing in one of the cysts. For us, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

I'm glad to have this scheduled and am looking forward to moving on afterwards.
