I had my third follow-up with the doctor today. Everything continues to go very well - the incision continues to heal and I'm having only minimal pain; my kidney function is great; my lungs are clear; my blood pressure is in range after a medication adjustment; the swelling in my lower extremities continues to subside; I'm able to do more light activity each day. The doctor has already reduced me from two to one checkup per week and anticipates going to every two weeks if things continue as they have so far.
Personally, I feel super. I haven't needed pain medication since two days after the surgery. I had been told to expect the second week after surgery to be tough, but that hasn't been the case so far. I'm walking and getting around normally. I'm starting to get some conditioning back. The danger for me now is overdoing it. I'm still on strict restrictions as to activities, which I'm doing my best to comply with.
As for changes related to having a normal working kidney, they've been significant. While some of it may be due to my meds, it's still remarkable. The itching over my whole body is gone. I'm not cold all the time. The scaly patches on my face are gone. My sinuses have cleared up. I haven't had any foot or calf cramping. I'm once again able to wear my contacts. I'm not fatigued all the time. I can only imagine how my body is impacted by having a clean blood supply.
At times I think this has all gone too well. But that thought is fleeting, and the truth is that I have been incredibly blessed. What a gift!
