Round Two

I'm not writing this post from my infusion chair this time, nor from the hospital bed I've inhabited for the last week. Fortunately, I was discharged and got home late last night, much to all of our relief and delight. If you're wondering what that's all about, you're not alone; we didn't let many people know what was happening during the episode, so the news got out mostly by word of mouth.

A week after my second chemo treatment my blood pressure started dropping, and our best efforts couldn't correct it. I ended up getting the first ambulance ride of my life as I couldn't even get to the car for Nancy to take me to the ER. Tests showed I had lost a lot of blood in the space of less than two days. I was admitted to the ICU and ended up getting 8 units of blood over the course of my stay. [Many thanks to any and all who donate blood. It is a great gift.]

My oncologist believes the whole episode was triggered by the chemo treatment, which was at a higher dose than the first one. Obviously that will factor in as we move forward. In the meantime I'm back home continuing to recover from that fun little adventure.

I want to acknowledge the wonderful care I got from the ICU staff and everyone else who was involved in my care. It is a blessing to have caring and knowledge people on your side.

In the meantime, the Cardinals gave us a scare before moving on to the next level of the playoffs. Ready for more October baseball!

  1. So glad you are home to see the Cardinals continue their quest! Also, thanks for the reminder that I am eligible to donate blood again ;) -Wendy_
